Deacon Elijah Mosely was the eldest son of the late Deacon Eli and Mrs. Mattie Mosely.

He was born in Terrell County, Georgia, on June 24, 1940, and received his education in the schools there. He continued his education at Monroe Area Vocational Technical School (Albany Technical College) and became a master mechanic.

Deacon Mosely joined Jordan Grove Baptist Church at a young age and was baptized by Rev. L. W. White. He was later ordained as a deacon in 1969 under the pastorate of the late Rev. Eugene J. Menefee.

He joined Friendship Memorial Baptist Church, now Oakridge Baptist Church, in 1989 and continued to serve faithfully as a deacon. He was one of the first trustees of Friendship Memorial Baptist Church and was also an avid Sunday School attendee.

He met his wife, the late Mrs. Gladys Wilson Mosely, while attending a National Baptist Congress of Christian Education in Little Rock, Arkansas. They married on June 19, 1971, and shared more than 53 years together. Two children were born to their union: Mr. Eliott Mosely (Dr. Sonya) and Ms. Elicia Powell. Their children were deeply influenced by their parents’ faith and dedication to family. He was blessed with two beloved grandchildren, Eliott Jr. (E.J) and Elaina Mosely.

Among his greatest accomplishments were participating in and marching in the Albany Civil Rights Movement alongside Dr. Martin Luther King and other notables and helping to secure the land for the erection of Oakridge Baptist Church.

Deacon Mosely was also an adamant fisherman who loved to fish during his spare time. Growing up on a farm in Terrell County, Georgia, he learned how to prepare the fields for planting. He later used those skills to create a garden behind his son’s home, where he planted fruits and vegetables. He visited the garden every morning and evening, faithfully tending to the work of his hands.

Deacon Mosely was a devoted family man who worked two full-time jobs, at MacGregor and Darton College, for more than twenty-five years. Most Saturdays, he spent the day working on cars while always reserving Sundays for worship.

Throughout the years, and even until December of last year, he could always be found at church and Sunday School on Sundays.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys; his parents, Deacon Eli and Mrs. Mattie Mosely; and his siblings, Mrs. Georgia Johnson, Mrs. Bertha Schoefield, Mr. Harvey Mosely, and Mrs. Margie M. Wilson.

On June 20, 2026, around 9:15 p.m., the Lord, in His tender mercy, dispatched an angel and called His servant home. No longer burdened by earthly illness, Deacon Mosely is now among the angels and perfectly healed.

He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Mr. Eliott Mosely (Dr. Sonya), Ms. Elicia Powell, and Mr. Roderick Collins (Junie); and his grandchildren, Eliott Jr. and Elaina Mosely.

He is also survived by his siblings, Deacon Julius Mosely (Valorie), Rosie Williams, Catherine Mosely, Pearlene Lucas, Orrie Mosely (Beverly), Mollie Taylor, Tommy Hightower, and Willa Menefee (Jerome); his brothers-in-law, Rev. E. L. Wilson, Albert Wilson, and Michael Wilson; and his sisters-in-law, Lillie Blackmon and Ruby Ann Wilson.

The family is forever grateful to his caregivers, Ms. Juanita Brown, Ms. Diane Jones, Ms. Natoya Hill, Ms. Rico Gilbert, Ms. Leona Broadway Brown, and Ms. Juanita J. Hayes, for their dedication, devotion, and excellent care. 

He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, church family, and friends.
