With hearts filled with gratitude for a life well lived, we celebrate the earthly journey of Mrs. Ruth Ella McDowell Severson of Edison, Ga, who peacefully transitioned from labor to reward on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at the age of 82.

Surrounded by the enduring love of her children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, and devoted friends, Ruth quietly answered her Master’s call after courageously enduring a difficult illness.

Born on February 13, 1944, in Clay County, Ga, Ruth was the cherished daughter of the late Johnnie McDowell and Sarah L. McDowell. She was educated in the Clay County School System and attended A. Speight High School in Fort Gaines, Ga.

On December 18, 1960, Ruth united in Holy Matrimony with the love of her life, Mr. George James Severson. Together they built a home rooted in faith, love, hard work, and unwavering devotion to family. Their marriage flourished for forty-four beautiful years until his passing on September 16, 2004. Together they were blessed with three children, whom they loved unconditionally and nurtured with wisdom, compassion, and strength.

Ruth believed there was dignity in honest work and purpose in serving others. Gifted with remarkable skill and a servant’s heart, she spent more than fifty years as a respected seamstress, domestic worker, caregiver, and cleaning professional. Throughout those years, she formed countless meaningful friendships with people of every age and background who admired not only the quality of her work but the warmth of her character.

She later faithfully served the Calhoun County Child Nutrition Department, where she dedicated twenty-three years before retiring. Ruth’s life reflected excellence, dependability, humility, and grace. She was a woman whose poised presence brought peace, whose honest words carried wisdom, whose quick wit kept people laughing, and whose loving heart left an unforgettable impression on everyone she encountered.

Her greatest joy was found in the simple blessings of life. She delighted in decorating her home, sewing beautiful creations, tending to her yard, and gathering with those she loved most. Family was the center of Ruth’s world, and every meal shared, every conversation held, and every memory created became another thread woven into the beautiful tapestry of her life.

From an early age, Ruth was conscious of her spiritual needs and understood the importance of faith. She united with Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Bluffton, Ga, where she faithfully served for many years. Later in life, her personal Bible study with Jehovah’s Witnesses deepened her spiritual walk and led her to dedicate her life to Jehovah through water baptism in July 2021.

She remained steadfast in her faith, finding comfort, hope, and strength in Jehovah’s promises until the very end. Awaiting her in eternal rest were her beloved husband, George James Severson; her parents, Johnnie and Sarah L. McDowell; her siblings, Adele (Charles) Robinson, Willie Florence McDowell, Cornelius McDowell, and Sarah Mae McDowell; her parents-in-law, L.B. and Pearlie M. Severson and Annette Harden Severson; along with several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and other beloved family members who preceded her in death. Ruth leaves a legacy of faith, love, and perseverance that will forever live in the hearts of those who knew her best. She leaves to cherish her precious memory her devoted children, Sandra (Rev. Jack) Johnson of Edison, Ga, Debra (Lt. Col. James A.) Dorsey of Newnan, Ga, and Robert Severson of Edison, Ga. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Timothy (Brittany) Dorsey of Newnan, Ga, Rev. Justin Johnson of Lee County, Ga, Jessica Norman of South Fulton, Ga, Chavious Williams of Edison, Ga, Amanda McBride of Fairburn, Ga, and Tamara Cannon of Albany, Ga. She was further blessed with five treasured great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Jaedyn, Helena, Chandler, and Osiris, each of whom brought immeasurable joy to her life. She is lovingly survived by her siblings, Virginia (Martin) Clark, Velma Anderson, and Juanita Williams, all of Albany, Georgia, and Hurtis McDowell of Charlotte, North Carolina; along with cherished brothers and sisters-in-law, Rev. Dr. J.A. (Grace) Severson, Annie (Perry) Williams, Jeanette McDowell, Floyd Peterson, Rev. Jerome (Joan) Severson, Angela Streeter, Maxine Severson, Richard Severson, Johnnie Fuller and David (Mary) Severson; nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, lifelong friends, and countless others whose lives were forever enriched by her kindness. Ruth was also blessed with a remarkable circle of faithful companions whose friendship and support sustained and encouraged her throughout life’s journey: Velma Anderson, Juanita Williams, Eva Spann, Teshera Mitchell, Mary Ann Bryant, Demetria McDonald, and Veronica Shingles. Their unwavering love and support were among God’s many blessings in her life. Though her earthly journey has ended, the love Ruth shared, the wisdom she imparted, and the example she set will continue to inspire generations to come. Her hands may now be still, but the lives she touched will forever bear the imprint of her compassion, generosity, quiet strength, and enduring faith. Today, we celebrate not only a life measured in years, but a legacy measured in love.
