Willie James
Lucas
April 24, 1938 – April 12, 2026
Reverend Dr. Willie James Lucas was born in Blakely, Early County, Georgia on April 24, 1938. He was one of two children in the union of the late Will Lucas and Rosa Lee Carr-Lucas.
He was educated in the Dougherty County School System, graduating from Monroe High School. Believing strongly in higher education, he attended Albany State College (University) as a music major, and Mercer University in Christian Theology.
Very early in life, he began his journey of Christian stewardship at the Arms of Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Blakely, Georgia. In later years, he retired from the United Methodist Church and continued his connected membership at Westtown United Methodist Church of Albany, under the leadership of Pastor Kenneth West.
Reverend Lucas discovered his true passion and love for music in high school which continued throughout his life. Often described as an extraordinarily gifted musician, he formed the James Lucas trio and traveled throughout the country bringing joy to countless audiences. His musical career also included playing with numerous recording artists, including Dionne Warwick, Clarence Carter, and Percy Sledge. Reverend Lucas was grateful for the gift of music and was careful to return the gift back to God through service in the Freefall Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, and Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church and Second Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church of Albany, Georgia. Two of his special friends and fellow musicians were Alford Thomas (drummer) and Lester Goshen (organist). Together, they were a cornerstone of the music ministry, with a unique ability to make every service special.
Not only was Reverend Lucas an accomplished musician, but he was also the published author of Declaring War on Mountains That Won’t Move, The Creative Power of Words, and The Parable of the Lost Son—all listed on Amazon, Kindle Books.
On April 12, 2026, Almighty God called his faithful servant home to eternal peace and rest.
Cherished memories will forever remain with his aunt, Christine Carr; his daughter, Sharie Gadsden (Bruce); nephews, Christopher Bryant-Lucas (Melissa) and Robert A. Lucas (Sylvia); great niece and nephews, Tawanda Lucas Clark, Derric Lucas, and Melvin Paul; and a host of great-great nieces, close cousins, and friends.
